Ohio Animal Advocates (OAA) is proud to highlight an incredible milestone for The Cocoon—a new outdoor Dog Run that enhances their emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their pets. This vital addition reflects The Cocoon’s dedication to providing trauma-informed, safe spaces where survivors can begin their healing journey without being separated from their beloved companion animals.

The outdoor Dog Run was created to address the physical and emotional needs of pets accompanying survivors. This spacious, gated area allows dogs to play off-leash, bond with their owners, and enjoy the outdoors. Thoughtfully designed, the Dog Run includes multiple dog houses, toys, and water bowls, ensuring a comfortable and enriching environment for furry friends.

Supporting Survivors Holistically

Pets offer survivors emotional support, companionship, and a sense of normalcy during challenging times. By enabling pets to remain with their owners, The Cocoon ensures both human and animal needs are met, fostering healing and peace of mind for all. This compassionate approach recognizes the unique bond between survivors and their pets, enhancing recovery for both.

Community Support Made It Possible

The realization of the Dog Run would not have been possible without the unwavering generosity and dedication of community partners. OAA joins The Cocoon in extending heartfelt thanks to:

  • First Presbyterian Church of Perrysburg

  • First Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green

  • Maumee Valley Presbytery

  • Perrysburg Rotary Club

  • Rotary Club of Bowling Green

  • Eagle Scout Zachary Clement

  • Portage Valley 4-H Club

These organizations and individuals played a crucial role in bringing this long-held dream to life, creating a safe and lasting resource for survivors and their pets.

A Step Forward in Advocacy

OAA celebrates this achievement as a significant step toward holistic animal welfare and survivor support. The Dog Run stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.

By sharing this story, OAA hopes to inspire continued advocacy for trauma-informed shelters that welcome both survivors and their pets. Together, we can create a future where no one has to choose between their safety and the companionship of their beloved animals.
