Two Non-Profits Collaborate so that we Don’t Forget the Pets During Challenging Times

The human-animal bond is growing more and more to the forefront of animal welfare and social services. Pets are often considered family and a crucial part of many individuals’ lives. Yet in instances of domestic violence or homelessness, pet owners struggle to find housing and services. Oftentimes faced with leaving their pets behind in order to protect and care for themselves.

In 2019, RedRover and Greater Good Charities took note and collaborated so that people and their pets can stay together especially in times of crisis. Their collaboration resulted in the site DontForgetThePets.org.

This incredible site offers education and resources so that non-profits and other organizations can create programs to aid and assist this specific, underserved demographic. From a training handbook, legal documents, and educational videos the site is a one-stop, self-guided creation site to help keep families together. For those who are unsure what to do with the tools and resources, there’s coaching availability!  Check out events they are hosting on Housing People and Pets in Crisis: 2/27 webinar and 3/12 in person event in Columbus at Columbus Humane and register.

Don’t Forget the Pets is an amazing step in the human-animal bond and creating a voice for this dynamic. If you’re not sure if your local humane society, domestic violence or homeless shelter has a similar resource, share this site with them!  You can also refer to OAA's statewide resource lists for pet food pantries, low-cost S/N and TNR, safe havens to get animals out of domestic violence, and where to report cruelty, as well as grants and assistance for families and pets in need.
