Pass the Federal Child and Animal Abuse Detection and Reporting Act

OAA MISSION AREA:  Community Compassion

ACTION LEVEL: Federal; House Resolution (HR) 2808

Help protect children and animals

H.R. 2808 requires data collected by the federal government from state child protection agencies to include information on animal abuse.

By itself, animal abuse is an abhorrent crime, and the link between animal abuse and other crimes is well established. In a violent household, companion animals are often victims of the same abusive behaviors that are also directed towards partners/spouses, children, and vulnerable adults.  Wherever domestic violence occurs, pets are at risk of abuse. Wherever pets are abused, household members are at risk of domestic violence. Passing H.R. 2808 will require the collection of information that will help save animals and family members.

Take Action

Dear Congressmember ____________,

Please support H.R. 2808, the Child and Animal Abuse Detection and Reporting Act, which will provide valuable information to the professionals who work with abused children.

Under this legislation, data voluntarily provided by state child protection agencies under the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) would include information about animal abuse as a risk factor for child abuse. Child welfare professionals and others would gain valuable additional insights into violence in the home.

By itself, animal abuse is an abhorrent crime, and the link between animal abuse and other crimes is well established. In a violent household, companion animals are often victims of the same abusive behaviors that are also directed towards partners/spouses, children, and vulnerable adults.  Requiring the collection of information about animal abuse will help save animals and family membrs from abuse and even death.

I ask that you support H.R. 2808, and help protect both children and animals by improving NCANDS to include animal abuse.

Sincerely,
